I am always ten steps behind my life.<\/p>\n
I had a cell phone the size of a brick when everyone I knew had switched to flip-phones, I always file an extension on my taxes.\u00a0 I don\u2019t tweet, don’t own a nook or an Ipad. There’s always a bill late, a lighbulb out, a half written letter, a plant that needs to be watered.<\/p>\n
On days when I am really overwhelmed, I am nostalgic for a simpler, slower time when I didn\u2019t feel like a tortoise in a world of hares. \u00a0 I miss dialing phones,\u00a0 the sound of a busy signal or the way the cord made static when you stretched it too far.<\/p>\n
And then there is blogging. When blogging first appeared on the internet,my friends encouraged \u00a0me to start one,\u00a0 I smiled and put it on my novel length list of \u201cthings to get to\u201d<\/p>\n
Now, over a decade later, I am blogging.<\/p>\n
Right now. \u00a0This very second. See? Here it is.<\/p>\n
My intention was to write at least a paragraph for every letter of the alphabet every day of the week. That was last month.\u00a0 It’s May 23rd\u00a0 a month since my last \u201cblog entry\u201d and I am only on letter \u201cb\u201d<\/p>\n
See what I mean?<\/p>\n
A few months ago, my boyfriend hired a personal organizer to help me with my struggles to keep up with things.\u00a0 Troy, a balding ex-dancer told me I should start with my filing cabinet. \u00a0 For three hours we sifted through piles of paper, throwing out entire folders worth of bills. ”<\/p>\n
Brooklyn Union Gas <\/i>has been called Keyspan since 2000,\u201d Troy said with a flourish as he dumped the thick file in the plastic bag.Even more embarrassing was the Thank You notes I found that Aidan had written for after his eighth birthday party.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow old is he now?\u201d Troy asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cSeventeen.\u201d<\/p>\n
He threw the notes into the garbage without a sound.<\/p>\n
Writing that sentence compels me to apologize to anyone who may be reading this.\u00a0 I’m sorry if I never sent a thank you note, if I forgot to return an e-mail, if I didn\u2019t RSVP.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that I didn\u2019t want to, I just have trouble keeping up with things.<\/p>\n
